Cabinets, sprayed like furniture.
From 1970s oak downtown to builder-grade thermofoil in the new subdivisions. Different substrates, same four steps.

Painter Hotline paints kitchen and bathroom cabinets throughout Brighton, Colorado and the surrounding towns. Cabinets are degreased, scuff-sanded, primed with a bonding primer formulated for slick cured finishes and sprayed with a cabinet-grade topcoat, with doors and drawer fronts finished off-site and boxes sprayed in place under containment. Front Range figures published for 2026 put a refinished kitchen somewhere between $2,000 and $8,000, where replacing the same cabinetry generally starts around $15,000 and climbs well past $30,000 for custom work. Two substrates, one process, one exception
Older Brighton kitchens tend to be solid wood or wood veneer: honey oak, 1990s maple, occasionally something stained very dark. Those refinish beautifully and the process is standard.
Newer builder kitchens often include thermofoil, which is a vinyl film heat-pressed onto a fiberboard core. It looks like painted wood until you get close. This is the exception, and it matters.
Thermofoil can be painted, but only with a specific approach, and if the film is already peeling or bubbling at the edges near a heat source, paint will not fix it. Honest answer in that case: those doors need replacing and the boxes can be painted to match. We would rather say that at the estimate than have you discover it in year two.
The four steps, and why chipped jobs skipped one
Degrease. Cooking residue builds an invisible film on every door near the stove. Nothing bonds through it.
Scuff sand. Factory finishes are slick on purpose so food wipes off. That slickness is what a coating has to overcome, and abrasion is the only way.
Bonding primer. Not wall primer. A product made to grip a cured finish, and on older oak it also blocks tannin bleed.
Cabinet-grade topcoat. Wall paint never cures hard enough. A door closes a hundred times a week against a frame and soft paint loses.
The oak grain question
There is a lot of honey and golden oak in Brighton's older housing. Oak grain is deep and open and paint does not fill it. Two legitimate choices: leave the grain visible, which reads as painted wood and keeps character, or fill it for a smooth modern slab look, which adds labor. We will show you both on your own doors before you decide.
Refinish or replace
| Refinish when | Replace when |
|---|---|
| Solid wood or quality plywood boxes | Particleboard swollen under the sink |
| Doors hang square and hinges hold | Doors warped or split past adjusting |
| Layout works, color does not | The kitchen genuinely does not function |
| Thermofoil intact and well bonded | Thermofoil peeling or bubbling at the edges |
What the week looks like
Three to five days on site. Doors and drawer fronts come off, get labeled and leave for spraying; boxes are sprayed in place behind containment. You keep your counters and appliances the whole time, and plan on open shelving for the week.

How much does cabinet painting cost in Brighton?
Published Front Range data puts professional cabinet refinishing at roughly $2,000 to $8,000 for a typical kitchen. Door and drawer count and the condition of the existing finish drive the number.
Can thermofoil cabinets be painted?
With a specific approach, yes. But if the vinyl film is already peeling or bubbling at the edges near a heat source, paint will not fix that. Those doors need replacing and the boxes can be painted to match.
Will honey oak grain still show?
Unless it is filled, yes. Oak grain is deep and open and paint does not bridge it. Leaving it visible keeps character; filling it gives a smooth modern look and adds labor. We will show you both on your own doors.
Do you spray or brush?
Spray. Doors and drawer fronts are finished off-site and boxes are sprayed in place behind containment. Brushed cabinets look brushed, which defeats the purpose.
How long is my kitchen out of action?
Three to five days. You keep countertops and appliances throughout, with doors off for most of it, so plan on open shelving for the week.
Can you fix cabinets someone else painted badly?
Usually. We check how well the existing finish is still holding, which decides whether it can be abraded and recoated or has to come off entirely, then build the finish back up from there.
