Can you paint thermofoil and builder cabinets?

Some builder kitchens paint beautifully. Some should never see a brush. The difference is the material, and you can usually tell in two minutes.

Off-white room repaint with white doors and trim and a wood-look floor
Direct answer

Usually, but it depends on the material. Thermofoil cabinets can be painted only if the plastic film is still fully bonded; if it is peeling or bubbling, usually near the oven or dishwasher, paint will not hold and the film must come off or the doors be replaced. Laminate, factory-painted MDF and stained oak can all be painted after degreasing, scuff sanding and a bonding primer, followed by a cabinet-grade enamel that takes about 30 days to fully cure.

Guide

What is actually in a builder kitchen

Newer homes around Brighton were mostly built by production builders, and the cabinets reflect it. Four materials cover most of what we see, and they paint very differently.

MaterialHow to spot itCan it be painted?
ThermofoilSeamless plastic-like skin wrapped over the door edges, often whiteOnly if the film is fully bonded; never over peeling film
Laminate or melamineFlat, very smooth, sometimes with a visible edge bandYes, with degreasing, scuffing and a bonding primer
Painted MDFFactory paint over a smooth core, crisp profilesYes, the easiest of the four
Stained oak or mapleVisible wood grain, usually clear-coatedYes; oak grain shows through unless it is filled

Thermofoil: the one to check first

Thermofoil is a plastic film fused over a composite core. It is durable and easy to clean until the bond lets go, and then nothing you put on top will hold it down. Before talking colors, check three places: the edges of the doors beside the oven and range, the doors above or next to the dishwasher, and any door near a toaster or coffee maker that vents steam. Lifting, bubbling or a wavy edge there means the film is failing.

  • Film still tight everywhere: degrease, scuff sand without cutting through the film, bonding primer, then a cabinet enamel. It can look very good.
  • Film lifting on a few doors: replace those doors or strip the film and prime the core, then paint everything to match.
  • Film failing across the kitchen: painting is the wrong answer. New doors on the existing boxes is usually the better spend.

Laminate, MDF and oak

Laminate and factory-painted MDF fail for the same reason as any slick surface: paint over grease and gloss without a bonding primer, and it peels off in sheets. Proper degreasing and a primer made for slick surfaces is the difference. Oak is a different issue: it paints well, but the open grain telegraphs through the paint. Decide before the job whether you want it filled smooth or left visible.

How we do builder cabinets

  1. Doors and drawer fronts removed, labeled and sprayed away from the kitchen.
  2. Every surface degreased, then scuff sanded.
  3. Bonding primer suited to the material, sanded smooth.
  4. Two coats of cabinet-grade enamel, with full recoat time between them.
  5. Doors rehung and adjusted; then the finish keeps hardening for about a month.

Benjamin Moore’s guidance for its cabinet enamel is a useful benchmark: dry to the touch in a few hours, no use for at least two to three days, full cure in about 30 days. Questions

Builder cabinet questions

Can you paint thermofoil cabinets?

Sometimes. If the film is still fully bonded, thermofoil can be scuffed, primed with a bonding primer and painted. If it is peeling, bubbling or lifting at the edges, paint will not fix it; the film has to come off or the doors need replacing.

How do I know if my cabinets are thermofoil?

Thermofoil doors have a smooth, seamless plastic-like surface that wraps around the edges with no visible joints, often in white. Look at the back edges and near the oven or dishwasher: lifting film or bubbles are a giveaway.

Why does thermofoil peel near the oven?

Heat. The film is bonded to the core with adhesive, and repeated heat from an oven, cooktop or dishwasher vent can weaken that bond. That is where we see it fail first.

What primer works on thermofoil and laminate?

A bonding primer made for slick surfaces, after degreasing and scuff sanding. Shellac-based bonding primers are a common choice for this. The topcoat is a cabinet-grade enamel.

How long before painted cabinets can be used?

Most cabinet enamels are dry in hours but take about 30 days to reach full hardness. Benjamin Moore advises not using freshly painted cabinets for at least two to three days and waiting about 30 days before regular cleaning.

Is it cheaper to paint or replace builder cabinets?

Painting is usually far cheaper when the boxes are sound and the doors are bonded. When thermofoil is already peeling, new doors (sometimes painted MDF) can make more sense than trying to save the film.
